How it plays

The Descent

Fight, retreat, salvage, descend again. The only thing the deep cannot take is what you got out alive.

The loop

  1. Emberfall City. The persistent safe hub. Salvage at the Blacksmith, sell to the Pill Master, buy, craft, and step onto the Descent Array.
  2. The descent. Fight through a dungeon that exists only for you and your party, and is generated fresh each time. Every kill rolls loot for each party member in the run, so nobody fights over a drop.
  3. The clock. The Miasma builds on you as you go. The deeper you are, the less grace you get and the harder it hurts.
  4. Extraction. Press T for a three-second channelled Qi Portal home. Any hit or combat action breaks it. It is one-way: there is no door back down. Everything you carried out is yours.

Instanced and generated

Emberfall City is a shared place. Every combat zone is its own instance, private by default and shared only with your party, which holds up to four. Layouts are built from a seed by a binary-space-partition generator, rooms joined by corridors, so no two descents are the same and nobody gives directions to a room in the Vaults.

What you lose, and what you do not

Safe

Equipped gear is never dropped. It frays on death and can be repaired, but the build you invested in is never taken from you.

At risk

Your pack. Space is finite, so a haul forces triage. Die, and the loose pack spills at your remains, and the descent is held for one return so you can go back for it.

A death in a combat zone also tears a piece of your soul from you: a quarter of your progress toward the next level. If a creature struck the killing blow, it carries the piece away and grows stronger for it: kill that holder to take it back, or, once its hold is spent, the piece is restored by your next deliberate extraction. With no killer to claim it, the piece lies knotted where you fell, and you must go back and touch it. Die again before then and it is scattered for good. Carrying a jackpot out and putting it on is the moment it stops being at risk and becomes permanently yours. That moment is the point of the game.

Combat

Pure action RPG. You move, you aim with the cursor, you dodge and you block. There is no auto-targeting, no threat table, and no trinity: every cultivator owns their own survival. Enemies notice you by proximity and by how loudly your build and party announce themselves. The dial between solo and group play is the aura: more players or more aura-boosting gear means a bigger presence, a deeper roster and richer rewards.

Bosses read, then react

Bosses and elites are the read-and-react part of the game. Every dangerous attack carries a wind-up of roughly a second or two, shown before the hit lands. Bosses paint it on the ground as a tell; elites show it in their body. You answer with one generous dodge or a block. It is not frame-perfect; it is dodge the telegraph.

Grael, the First Hollowed, holds the arena of the Blight Streets as the first boss of the descent. Far below, at the Maw Approach, waits Malphas, The Abyssal Fragment. Killing a fragment buys time, never victory.

Depth, not level gates

Anyone can enter any depth. Difficulty comes from what the enemies do, not from health sponges: deeper means more of them, a deeper roster, more elites and anomalies, and shorter grace against the Miasma.

The six depths
DepthWhereWhat changes
D1Blight StreetsSlow wind-ups, small aggro radius, one attacker at a time
D2Burial WarrensFaster attacks, two enemies may aggro together
D3Thousand Seal VaultsWide aggro, enemies call allies and flank
D4The Maw ApproachCoordinated attacks, enemies wait at doorways
D5Heart of the MawEvery room pre-aggroed, elites only
D6The World CoreThe bottom of the descent: a fixed layout, and it does not open to you until you have walked the Threefold Path

Loot

Gear climbs a cultivation ladder of grades: Mortal, Spirit, Earth, Heaven, Immortal, tied to the depth you found it at and to materials from Beast Core up to Maw Bone. Items carry few, punchy affixes. Above them sit the Dao Artifacts, a curated set of build-defining uniques. Each one grants a skill or changes how an ability behaves, and none is just bigger numbers.

Gear arrives unidentified, as uncondensed Qi, and is revealed when you carry it out. The Blacksmith refines gear in a deterministic direction you choose. The Bone Compass lets you aim a descent at a depth with a guaranteed bonus, so an unlucky run never goes dark.

Loot is self-found. Each party member rolls their own drops from a kill, and there is no player market at launch.

Spirit Stones are the currency. They are Qi condensed into stone.

Cultivation

Level cap is 20, across seven stages: Body Tempering, Qi Condensation, Foundation Establishment, Core Formation, Nascent Soul, Spirit Severing and Tribulation Crossing. You advance by taking a Breakthrough Pill at the level threshold. Each stage is a survival anchor, a mechanic unlock and a beat of the story.
