The sects

Five Dao, five verbs

To survive, the first cultivators organized into sects, each dedicated to a single method of refining Abyssal Qi: a single Dao, lived to its conclusion.

All five share one combat chassis of movement, dodge and block. On top of it, each has one signature resource and one verb that gives it a different rhythm from the very first button press. Each also has its own skills, and the build-defining Dao Artifacts you find push a sect toward different styles of play. Every sect is a self-sufficient damage-dealer; there is no required tank and no required healer.

Iron Lantern Gate

Bastion of Flesh · Frontliner

Signature
Fortitude
Verb
Absorb

Stand in the swarm, soak, release.

“If the soul is a flame, the body must be the iron lantern that protects it from the wind.”

Founded by Kaelen the Unyielding, who came up out of the deep mines and refused to move while the Miasma packed down inside him like rock around a shaft. The Lanterns build Fortitude by taking hits. Every blow that lands on the alloy feeds them, and when they are heavy enough, they let it out. They can also compress their Fortitude into a standing summon, the Puppet-Forging Art, which forges an Iron Puppet.

Nether Blade Palace

Ghost Walkers · Assassin

Signature
Concealment
Verb
Spike

Stalk, burst, vanish, repeat.

“To fight the Abyss, one must become its echo.”

Founded by Master Sora, once an officer of the unseen, who learned that the Miasma is a shadow and a shadow is cover. Nether Blade disciples merge into it, stop being a target the Abyss knows how to find, strike once, decisively, and are gone before the dark knows it was wounded.

Pure Yang Palace

Light Bringers · Mage

Signature
Resonance
Verb
Pour

Hold range, kite, pour.

“I forget my mother’s face so that you may see the path ahead.”

Founded by the Solar Oracle, who burned her own name away to light the path for others. She found that the Miasma could be refined past mass and colour into Pure Light, the one substance that physically repels the things of the Rift. The fuel is not Qi alone but years, and the ties that go first. These are the masters who hold the City-Guarding Array. They are the most loved of the sects, and the loneliest.

Blood Demon Sect

Parasitic Blades · Bruiser

Signature
Bloodpool
Verb
Churn

Keep killing or starve. A frantic dive.

“The Abyss devours. We devour the Abyss.”

Founded by the Red Sovereign, who refused refinement entirely and learned to tear Qi directly from the hearts of Abyssal beasts. It is the fastest path to power in the Rift, and a damnation. Emberfall does not name these cultivators to their faces; behind their backs it calls them the Unrefined.

Ten Directions Palace

Architects of Space · AoE

Signature
Void charges
Verb
Place

Set the board, then exploit it.

“This world is a cage with many holes. We just need to know where to pull.”

Founded by Dr. Aris Thorne, a physicist who watched the boundary between worlds fail and lost his sight to it. Blind, he learned to feel the thin places in the membrane instead, and to pry small controlled rifts open where they do the most good. Their art is patience and geometry: read the board, find the seam, open it.
