The setting
The Abyssal Rift
An infinite graveyard of dead civilizations, and the newest one is ours.
The Zero Hour
A celestial anomaly, later named the Great Rift, tore through space-time and pulled the whole of Earth out of its orbit and down into a pocket dimension. That dimension is the Abyssal Rift. The moment of the tearing is the Zero Hour, and every surviving calendar counts from it. It has now been some three hundred years.
The sun did not follow. In its place hangs a churning violet void that moves with a slow, watchful rhythm and punishes attention. Those who stared at it too long went mad, and the madness did not pass.
In the first forty-eight hours, sixty percent of humanity died. Not by fire or famine, but by fog. The Abyssal Miasma rolled across the broken continents, a corrosive vapour that does not so much kill the body as unwrite it. It has never lifted.
The graveyard
The survivors learned the worst fact early: they were not the first. Whole peoples were pulled through tears like the Great Rift long before humanity existed, and each ended here, harvested to ruin and silence. Their ruins lie beneath and beside the wreckage of Earth, layered into the deeper tiers of the descent: architecture that obeys no human geometry, vaults sealed by hands with too many fingers, catacombs whose dead were never human.
The deepest mark belongs to the Kharenoth, whose sealed vaults make up much of the Thousand Seal Vaults. No cultivator has found a Kharenoth face or a Kharenoth word that translates, only their dense dead stone, void-stone, worked into walls and seals. Every recovered seal-glyph faces inward. They built to keep something in.
Emberfall City
A remnant gathered, and built the last refuge on the bones of a fallen skyscraper fused into the new ground. What keeps Emberfall City standing is not its walls but the City-Guarding Array, a vast formation raised and held by the masters of the Pure Yang Palace. It is paid for continuously in their own years, and the mortal ties go first. While it burns, there is clean air to breathe and a place where a child can be told its mother’s name.
Inside the walls the work of survival is gathered into a handful of halls: the Descent Array from which every descent begins, the Sect Pavilion where the sects train initiates, the Pill Master, the Blacksmith, and, in a hidden corner, the Ghost Market, which is not open yet.
The Awakening
In the same hours the Miasma was killing the many, it was changing the few. Most who breathed it were consumed. A rare scattering internalized it, and their minds held. They found that the Miasma is a shadow of a higher dimension, and that it carries a distorted form of Qi. Filtering this Abyssal Qi through their own bodies, they could turn flesh to alloy, light to weapon, distance to nothing.
These were the first Cultivators. From their refusal to die came the five sects, and the only road out of the graveyard that is something other than death.
The descent
The world is read in depth. Emberfall City is depth zero, the last clean air. Below it the descent falls in six tiers toward the Maw of Malphas, and each step down is a step the Rift can hear more clearly.
D1 Blight Streets
Suburbs, once. Now hollow houses under a creeping overgrowth of Miasma-fed Blight that drinks the fog and spreads it. The most familiar place in the Rift, and the saddest.
D2 Burial Warrens
The world burrows. Tight, dark, branching passages where the Split-Skull Boar charges down corridors too narrow to dodge, and the Fog Archer looses condensed void from across the dark.
D3 Thousand Seal Vaults
The first true bones of the graveyard, in two faces: the Yin Wind Chasm, a raw wound of howling vortices, and the Black Stone Temple, a consecrated chamber of void-stone claimed by the Seal-Breaking Sages.
D4 The Maw Approach
The Miasma stops being fog and becomes pressure. The threshold of the Maw of Malphas, where a shed fragment of the sleeper surfaces again and again.
D5 Heart of the Maw
The Maw Depths: a churning throat of raw Abyss, home of the heaviest things in the world, the mountain-slow Mountain-Bearing Giant among them.
D6 The World Core
The bottom of the descent, and the one fixed place in a world that generates itself. It does not open to just anyone: you must walk the Threefold Path first. Nothing guards it, and that is the horror. Reaching it and returning alive earns a title: Legend of the World Core.
What lives there
The life of the Rift falls into three kinds: the corrupted, which were human or were Earth and have been unwritten into something that hunts; the constructs, made of Qi or void-stone to guard or serve; and the natives, the true creatures of the Rift.

The sleeper
At the centre of the world, beneath the throat of the Maw, sleeps Malphas, the Devourer of Stars. His tentacles are the Rifts themselves. The Great Rift that pulled Earth from its sky was not an accident of cosmology; it was a limb reaching. Earth did not fall into a place. Earth fell into a mouth.
What cultivators fight at the Maw Approach is not Malphas but Malphas, The Abyssal Fragment: a single shed sliver of the Devourer of Stars. It is enough to be the deadliest thing a human can meet and live.
